Genealogy, critique, and decolonization: Ibn Khaldun and moving beyond filling the gaps
Sertaç Sehlikoglu
The aim of this paper is to locate critique at the intersections of the genealogy of knowledge in anthropological thinking and the decolonizing movement. The paper approaches the decolonizing movement as one of the most crucial points in anthropological thinking. It is built on the premise that the decolonizing movement is set to go beyond filling the gaps in genealogies and it can do so by: (1) revising the ‘dismissed’ genealogies that has contributed to the formation of the contemporary classical theory, and (2) thinking creatively in implementing the critical thinking tools to the dismissed scholarship, in an equal manner to the Eurocentric scholarship. To illustrate, it uses the case of Ibn Khaldun, an Arab scholar of social sciences and historical analysis from 14th Century who is often referred to as the first sociologist. On the one hand, his influence in classical Western thinking is largely dismissed. On the other hand, as a counter-response to this dismissal, the new Islamic revivalist intelligentsia in the Muslim right engage with him in a selective manner that not only rejects that central critical thinking but, even worse, sanctions the local regimes of power, including that local canon. By locating his scholarship to multiple tropes in anthropological theory and reading his evolutionist thinking vis-à-vis the post-colonial literature in anthropology and sociology, I question the limits and possibilities of critical thinking within and beyond the decolonizing movement.

An Analysis on Ibn Khaldun's Methodology in Social Change
Dr. Mohd Hisyam Abdul Rahim
In the realms of historical sociology, Ibn Khaldun is a name that strikes absolute familiarity among experts. However, the discussions expressed in historical sociology debates do not specify how Ibn Khaldun's ideas and thoughts were actually focusing on social changes that occur in a society. Hence, the discussion of this article will analyse the approaches and methodologies applied by Ibn Khaldun in analysing the social changes that took place during his lifetime and prior to it, as recorded in Muqaddimah Ibn Khaldun. This paper uses a historical descriptive qualitative research approach. Facts were analysed using a text analysis approach in understanding Ibn Khaldun's methodology on social change and Muqaddimah Ibn Khaldun, assisted by induction and deduction approaches. As a result, the researcher found that Ibn Khaldun applied a diversity of approaches in discussing social changes which encapsulate humanitarian, historical philosophy, inquiry, logic and metaphysical, cr...

Abdullah Abdulganiy, Olatunji Abdulganiy
The paper attempts to establish the fact that, though sociology is regarded as purely a Western enterprise but a further examination of some non-western intellectual piece would reveal the opposite. General assessment was made of Ibn-Khaldun ideas in the Muqodimat with the aid of previous scholarly works that have assessed the masterpiece. Further effort was made in the paper to specifically show topical sociological issues raised by Ibn-Khaldun. Effort was made to compare and contrast his scholarly explanations with that of notable western sociologists. This paper shows that Ibn-Khaldun is a prominent classical sociological figure that should be accorded a legendary position and that his masterpiece is a legacy for present and future social engineers. Based on the relevance of Ibn-Khaldun work to the discipline of sociology, modern sociologists should put vested interest in studying Ibn Khaldun as one of the fore runners of the discipline.

Every society, whether simple and elementary or complex and advanced, has changed in the historical context. This change has always been due to some reasons which have absorbed historians', philosophers' and researchers' attention. In fact, change and transformation have been considered as integral parts, inherent nature and internal features of human societies. Applying Ibn Khaldun: The Recovery of a Lost Tradition in Sociology
Syed Farid Alatas
The writings oflbn Khaldirn, particularly the Muqaddimah (Prolegomenon), have rightly been regarded as being sociological in nature. For this reason, Ibn Khaldun has been widely regarded as the founder of sociology, or at least a precursor of modem sociology. While he was given this recognition, however, few works went beyond proclaiming him as a founder or precursor to the systematic application of his theoretical perspective to specific historical and contemporary aspects of Muslim societies in North Africa and the Middle East. The continuing presence of Eurocentrism in the social sciences has not helped in this regard: it often stands in the way of the consideration of non-Western sources of theories and concepts. This book provides an overview of Ibn Khaldiin and his sociology, discusses reasons for his marginality, and suggests ways to bring Ibn Khaldtln into the mainstream through the systematic application of his theory. It moves beyond works that simply state that Ibn Khaldun was a founder of sociology or provide descriptive accounts of his works. Instead it systematically applies lbn Khaldiin's theoretical perspective to specific historical aspects of Muslim societies in North Africa and the Middle East, successfully integrating concepts and frameworks from Khaldunian sociology into modem social science theories. Applying Ibn Khaldiin will be of interest to students and scholars of sociology and social theory.

The Muqaddima (Prolegomena) is the main work that made Ibn Khaldun (1332-1406) eminent not only in historiography, civilization studies, anthropology, and sociology, but also in philosophy, economy, demography, and other fields of study. Robert Irwin’s work on Ibn Khaldun contains a preface and eleven chapters, as well as a chronology of Ibn Khaldun’s life.
